Dee McBrien-Lee’s exhibit, Body Language, opens with a reception during the Old Mill District
First Friday Gallery Walk, September 4, from 3-7pm. Focusing on abstracted figures and the way they
interact with each other, each painting tells a story which is up to the viewer to interpret.
In many cases the title gives a clue.

Dee thrives on the challenge that creating something without boundaries or clear guidelines offers her imagination.
She considers herself first and foremost an abstract painter, and thrives on the challenge that creating something
without boundaries or clear guidelines offers her imagination. Most recently she has developed a
series combining the abstract elements she loves along with the incorporation of the human figure.

Beginning with areas of color, line and texture, Dee seeks to discover her subjects in her paintings as she moves through her process.
Acrylic paint carries the greatest weight with the addition of collage, graphite, oil sticks, natural elements and more.
Gold leaf can also be found in some of the paintings.

Once the first few layers are down, the discovery phase begins. For the works in this exhibit, ‘Body Language’,
it was often a single body part or suggestion of attitude that became the inspiration for a particular figure.
Additional characters were found through periods of meditation or were added intentionally.
Dee prefers not to use set patterns as she works but allows every painting to speak to her as it develops a life and story all its own.

‘Body Language’ is a compilation of Dee’s latest paintings featuring the human figure and the relationships between the characters.
The work moves from playful to contemplative to peaceful and mysterious. Discover what each paintings story through ‘Body Language’.
