Former Tumalo Art Co. member Mary Marquiss has fulfilled a long-time goal of writing a memoir that merges her art and life. Behind the Painting—An Artist’s Memoir will be released by Whitefox Publishing in London, May 7. It will be available in selected bookstores and on Amazon, and IngramSpark.
In this intimate memoir, Mary shares the personal stories that inspired ten of her paintings. Created across three decades, each work responds to both the light side of life and the serious challenges she navigated—family suicide, a stroke and cancer. “My art and my stories are interwoven. Together, they trace my path toward adventure and deeper self-discovery.”
Attend one of Mary’s book signings, in both Central Oregon and Portland, beginning with Roundabout Books April 23.

Adell Shetterly’s monotype Sail Away with Me has been accepted into Colors of Art and Poetry at the Linus Pauling Gallery at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Central Oregon. This exhibition celebrates the many ways art and poetry mirror the colors of our world—whether your palette holds pencils, paints, or words, its magic can speak to the soul. Adell’s poem of the same name will accompany the piece:
A soft drift,
unhurried,
moving in the way of quiet dreams.
Edges loosen
The quiet of the water
by your side.
A soft drift,
unhurried,
moving in the way of quiet dreams.
Edges loosen
The quiet of the water
by your side.
Colors of Art and Poetry opens Thursday, April 16, 6–7:30 pm at UUFCO and continues through June 7.
