San Miguel Mission is an actual church in Santa Fe, New Mexico, near where I used to live for many years. It was built between 1610 and 1626 and is historically referred to as the oldest church in the continental United States. I made it a part of my August 2026 featured solo exhibition, “High Loft,” because this exhibit is about things that aim high, both in the natural world and within our human aspirations for a better future. There is no better symbol of human ideals than a church spire, especially on an old and long-standing mission chapel that is still in use today.
