“The Place of the Creator” or Neahkahnie is what the mountain looming above these cliffs has been called by the Nehalem-Tillamook peoples. According to an online Oregon encyclopedia, the people hunted and gathered on the lower slopes for millennia. They even controlled the growth of the forest with small fires, creating elk pastures in the lower meadows, ensuring a better hunt. Indeed we passed a few elk on the way through Elk Flats on the trail to this viewpoint. Even today with the distant sounds of traffic on the 101, you can strongly feel the power of place when standing here.
