As we stirred in pre-dawn, our preparations were interupted by the prehistoric calls of Sandhill Cranes echoing across the Sparks Lake basin. Finally arriving at our photographic location, we were met by thick fog completely obscuring the anticipated sunrise view of the lake and South Sister. As the invisible sun rose to meet the fog, the scene transformed as fog swirled and shifted across the viewscape, revealing the mountain behind. Soon my vision evolved into what you see in 'Where Cranes Speak Freely.' Five minutes later, the fog was gone.
